DIY Disasters

D.I.Y seems to be synonymous with the rule of ‘if it can go wrong it will go wrong’. Most people have had their share of D.I.Y disasters to tell from frustrating flat packs to painting catastrophes and dodgy plumbing to dangerous electrics. How many people have started a D.I.Y project with the mind-set of ‘how hard can it be?’
In most cases of D.I.Y the outcome is relatively satisfactory, others have created something that vaguely resembles the picture on the box and for a small unfortunate minority the simple task of assembling a TV stand or installing new light fixture turns into utter chaos.

Sometimes for an unexplained reasons carnage ensues when seemingly intelligent, capable people pick up the hammer. The people below have shot themselves in the heart, sawed off their own arms, and evacuated their neighbourhoods and even uncovered World War II bombs in their back gardens!

The popularity of D.I.Y projects is on the rise and along with this the number of D.I.Y related accidents is increasing. Last year 25,000 Australians were hospitalised from ladder falls, 600 people a day ended up in hospital in the United Kingdom after carrying out D.I.Y, gardening or maintenance and the use of home power tools sent over 80,000 Americans seeking medical help. Accidents  happen that is a given but D.I.Y accidents are some of the most preventable ones if you follow the instructions, work within your skill level and don’t think it will be easy just because it is Do It Yourself!

Renovations to Increase Safety

I am the product of an unsafe home. My childhood home was a minefield of potential disasters. Tumbles down the stairs, long jagged cuts from chipped wood, blows to the head from falling tiles. These were the wonderful bounties provided by my childhood home. If you are living in a home where you are constantly skirting disaster, you might want to consider pulling out the hammer and nails to renovate. By renovating your home with safety in mind, you can prevent unnecessary accidents, save money on doctor bills, and create a house you can be proud to call home.

Tip 1: Installing or Replacing Windows

Do your bedrooms lack windows? Or are the windows slits that only small animals can fit through? If you answered yes to any of these questions, you should start your renovation project with your windows.  Bedroom windows do more than offer natural light and a wonderful view. They are meant to offer an alternate means of escape if the occupant is trapped in the room. Failure to install windows into your home’s bedrooms could be disastrous.

You can either install new windows or replace old ones by hiring a contractor or doing it yourself. If you plan on doing the installation yourself, you should check out this article.

Tip 2: Install a Railing

Do you have a staircase without a rail? Do you have family members or regular guests who are unstable on their feet? If you answered yes to both questions, you might want to think about installing a railing in your home. Older, younger, and clumsy individuals can use the railing to maintain their balance while walking up and down the stairs. Even individuals who normally choose not to use the railing can grab onto it to stop an unexpected fall. A railing is especially important if the staircase is steep or the stairs are uneven because an accident is more likely to occur.

You can hire a construction worker or handyman to install your railing, but I would not recommend it. The installation process is easy enough to be accomplished by virtually anyone.

Tip 3: Replace the Door

Are your doors flimsy wood or plastic? If you answered yes to this question, your home is vulnerable to intruders. Wood and plastic doors are easier to break into. Intruders can easily remove the door from its hinges, cut through the door with basic tools, or kicked in the door. You can increase your family’s safety by installing a steel door. The steel door, frame, and tamper resistant hinges will significantly increase the safety of the occupants of your home.

You can pick up a steel door at your local hardware store. Once purchased they are relatively easy to install.

Tip 4: Remaining Safe While Renovating.

Just remember that your family needs to remain safe during the renovation process. An unsafe renovation can do as much damage as an unsafe home. Here are some ways to keep your family safe while renovating:

  • Let your family know you are renovating.
  • Try to complete renovations while most of the family is away.
  • Never start a new project before you finish the current one.
  • Put away tools when they’re not in use.
  • Keep children out of rooms that are being renovated.

Home safety can save your family a lot of pain. By installing windows, doors, and railings, you can create a safe and secure home for your family. The increased safety and security will grant you the peace of mind to enjoy your home and family.

Allen Grove finished installing hand rails, windows, a security system, and fire alarms into his home a few months ago. He enjoys the increased safety and the reduction to his Dallas home insurance.

Some Common Home Remodeling problems and their Solutions

Lots of people are there who think that home remodeling projects are very complex things to execute and they don’t go for any such project due to the complexities involved. But these projects may prove to be a great success if you take care of just a few things. Though there are several things that may look quite difficult but there’s a solution for every problem. Let’s see what difficulties people find in executing a home remodeling project.

·       Selection of a Perfect Contractor
It’s quite true that the multitude of so many home remodeling contractors has made it very hard to identify a good contractor that knows to handle such projects efficiently but there are some very simple ways to recognize a perfect contractor. Let’s have a glance.

  • Experience An experienced contractor will obviously be able to tackle all the complexities of the project quite easily. He will have a look at all the things you want to have in your project and formulate a good plan to get the project executed to your satisfaction. He will take all important things into account and conduct the project efficiently.
  • Expertise The expertise of a home remodeling contractor is one of the most needed things. There are scads of ways to evaluate it. The first way is to have a look at the track record of the contractor. See how many projects he has undertaken so far and how satisfied are the customers with those projects. You can ask the contractor for a few customer references and meet those customers in person to determine how satisfactory the services are. Moreover, the option of visiting review sites is also there. Going through just a few references will tell you a lot about the performance of the contractor.

  • Tools and Equipments The equipments used by the professionals affect their performance largely. You can’t expect good results from even the best of the workmen providers unless they are given good equipments. You must make sure that the contractor you want to execute your remodeling project uses state of the art equipments and tools. This thing shouldn’t be compromised with at all as the results of your project depend significantly on it.

  • Warranties A good service provider will never hesitate from providing warranties for the work done by him. Contractors provide good quality services and products are quite confident about their performance and issue appropriate warranty for their work. You must confirm it with the contractor you consider that whether he or she provides such warranties or not. There is no point in selecting a contractor who doesn’t provide any warranties when there are lots of such contractors who do.

     High Costs of Remodeling Projects
There are so many home remodeling contractors in the industry trying to attract customers through various means. This competitive environment in the industry has made it necessary for the contractors provide their services at reasonable prices. The same thing holds true for material suppliers. The remodeling material is available at very competitive rates now. So the overall costs of such projects remain quite reasonable. The homeowners who feel the need of a remodeling project shouldn’t worry much about the costs. Obtaining quotes from a few contractors will acquaint them with the reality.
·
     Not Getting Desired Results
You can find umpteen of people who complain that they spend lots of money on their remodeling projects, but didn’t get satisfactory results. It’s because they didn’t care about planning the projects. You require to plan your home remodeling project carefully before starting it. Pay attention to all the aspects of the project and contemplate whether the plan you have formulated is complete in all respects or not.
The first thing is to identify the parts of the home that need repair so that you don’t have to seek any assistance down the line. The second thing is to think the ways which increase the look and feel of the home. A home that appears good and offers good aesthetic appeal is all a homeowner wants.

     Prices of the Materials
You mustn’t trust the remodeling contractor blindly when it comes to the prices of the materials to be used in the project. You should be having an idea about the rates of the materials before contacting the contractor so you may determine whether he is being honest in the deal or not. If you find that the prices of the material asked by the contractor are more than the quotes you have, you can ask him to reduce the price or look for another contractor.

What to Do When Air Conditioner Compressor Causes Problems?

Air conditioners are machines used to retain cold in a room or an entire building. The process of getting and retaining desired temperature is done through chemicals that convert from a gas state to a liquid and then reconverts to gas. Compressor plays a very imperative role in this entire process. It’s one of the most important parts of the system. The compressor squeezes the fluid and presses the molecules closely and tightly to raise the temperature. Then this pressurized fluid goes to the condenser from the compressor. Due to the extreme significance of the compressor, it becomes very imperative to keep it in good condition all the time. A dysfunctional or poorly functioning compressor can affect the entire process and break down the whole system. Here are a few tips to troubleshoot problems related to the compressor of an air conditioning system.

  • The very first thing you need to do after finding that the compressor of your air conditioner is not working is to look for damaged wires. Check all the connections properly and make sure that there is no problem with that. If any of the wires look loose or burned, you need to replace them immediately. The wire connections in the terminal box of the compressors should also be examined carefully to discover any traces of damages. Usually these types of damages need professional expertise to be fixed.
  • In case your air conditioning system is not providing required cooling, you are required to check the temperature settings. The temperature should be set below the room level. You should take the reading of the temperature at least after fifteen minutes of starting the system. If both the compressor and condenser fan are working and still the cooling is not sufficient, measure the temperature drop. It can be measured simply by calculating the difference between the temperature of the air while entering and leaving the unit. If there’s no significant drop in the temperature, the refrigerant of the unit may require to be charged.
  • If the condenser fan is working properly but the compressor is not operating, there may be three possibilities; the refrigerant is lower than the required amount, the compressor is broken down or it’s too hot to operate. If the first seems to be the case, you need to add refrigerant. In case the compressor is broken down, call in expert professionals. And if the compressor has gone too hot, let it cool properly and then try again.
  • Problems with the fan motor can also be a reason behind the poor functioning of a compressor. If the motor has any poor winding or locks, it can make the compressor incapable to operate. Some other problems like a worn bearing or motor can also be a reason for the compressor to not operate properly. Any such problem can create problems with the compressor and may require immediate attention.
  • Some other causes of dysfunction of a compressor may be issues with the capacitor, broken down motor overload protector, blown fuse or any other internal damages. If you find unable to figure out the problem, you definitely need to contact a reliable professional.

The Home Buying Decision - When You Can't Agree on a Home As a Couple

When you're looking around at homes as a couple the fur can definitely start flying if you can't agree on a home. The husband sees a home with a nicely laid out garage and workspace that has him sold on the house immediately. The wife does not like the home because the kitchen is too small and so are 2 of the bedrooms. She sees another house that she falls in love with but the husband is disappointed because it doesn't have the workspace he'd like to have to work on odd jobs.

Is it fair to compromise on a home?

The answer to this is quite simply, not really. When both the husband and wife have to compromise they'll usually never really be happy with the decision they made to do so. Every month they will be paying money on a mortgage for a house that they simply aren't really happy with. While compromise works great in a lot of different areas for a couple, that doesn't mean that it will work out well in this case. Hundreds of thousands of dollars can easily be invested into a property so you'll want to make sure that you both absolutely love the home that you're going to buy.

How to find the right home that you both love

If you've been looking around at different listings on the market and have yet to find the perfect dream home for the both of you, it's time to start over again. Get right back to the basics and make a fresh start with your home shopping. You have probably become frustrated up until now and it's time to step back from the situation and look at it with a brand-new set of eyes.

This means that you'll both be going back to the table and listing out the exact features that you want to see in a home that would make it perfect for you. The husband in this case would write down that he absolutely wants to have a workspace while the wife would demand a large kitchen and big bedrooms in the home.

Once both lists are compiled they would be put together as one big list that would define the dream home for the both of you. Then you would give this list to the real estate agent that you are working with. The agent will be able to take a look at all of the new homes that are entering the marketplace and let you know when something comes up that fits your criteria.

This is the best way to go about handling difficulties when it comes to agreeing on a home. Both you and your partner should be completely satisfied and happy with your next home purchase and with so many new listings being added to the market, there really isn't any reason why you would have to compromise on your property purchase.

Mistakes that Can Be Avoided By an Air Conditioning Agency!

Mistakes can be committed by anyone and AC repair agencies are not an exception. It doesn’t matter how experienced the agency may be mistakes can happen when least expected and as result it may impact performance and efficiency levels of the AC unit. Such mistakes may even hurt customer feelings and impact the business of the agency. Here is a brief of popular mistakes as committed by an air conditioning agency:

a) Not focusing on the air flow
Typically, all ACs comprise of three major parts namely the compressor, a condenser, and what is called an evaporator. It is imperative that all three major parts are in workable order lest the AC would seize to work. Even the most experienced professionals forget to check the air flow and lock up the unit and charge the customer for the work they have done. If the air flow is not adequate then it may take hours for the room to cool down to the temperature as set on the unit and a lot of power gets consumed in the entire process. Most of the air flow is controlled by the compressor and the cooling fan. This is why it is essential that both these parts are working in synchronization.

b) Overlooking other aspects essential for cooling
Yet another mistake that usually an air conditioning company tends to commit is that the professional forgets to check for other aspects that may impact the cooling of an AC. This could be key elements like not proper insulation, small openings through which the cool air can escape and/or not proper air sealing. It is also important to advise the homeowner of how they themselves can improve the cooling effect and ensure less power consumption. Even small things like keeping the door and windows closed could have a good impact on the cooling and reduce the power bill.

c) Skipping essential calculations
Technology has advanced in many ways and so has the make and quality of air conditioners. In case a homeowner is using an outdated or several years old air conditioning unit, chances are that the AC repair agency would just mend the machine, charge and leave. As a result, what happens is that may be after some time the unit again requires repair and/or does not offer much cooling and the homeowner would blame the agency for the poor work.

As a professional air conditioning agency, it is always best to inform the homeowner about the liabilities of having an out dated AC unit, what would be its impact on the power bill and what may happen in the near future. These calculations may change the mind of the homeowner and thank you for your suggestion and who knows... maybe he or she would want to purchase a new AC unit.

d) Trying to portray of being the lowest bidder
Being a low bidder is not bad but bidding the lowest and then not delivering quality services just because you want to make up for losses would have a bad impact on your business. At times, you would want to hire an inexperienced person to carry out the job and that can also have a negative impact on things. So, it is best to bid to that extent to which you can still deliver quality services and earn some profit. Try not to race to the bottom and become a loser as it would have its own ramifications.

Conclusion
As an air conditioning Mesa agency you would need to make the right choice. One path may lead to issues and the other to satisfaction. You constantly need to look for new customers and can only build your network through reputation, hard work and quality service.

Cheap Touchups Before Selling A Home

If you’re preparing to sell your home, you may want to consider some quick touchups you can do to improve the overall look and feel of your home. Who knows – these touchups may help you sell the house for more without requiring you to put in too much money and effort. Plus, it’s always great to do this before you leave a house if you have the time.

Without further ado, here are some simple, affordable ways to spruce up your home before it goes on the market:
  • Interior painting: a nice coat of paint on your walls can go a long way, plus you want to cover any screaming colors (pink, bright blue/green, orange, etc.) with neutral colors that the next homeowners will prefer when selecting the house. Painting does require some effort, but it’s rather inexpensive and can change the entire feel of the room and space.
  • Refinishing wood: while refinishing wood isn’t expensive, it requires quite a bit of effort. If you want to touch up your nice wood floors or cabinets, you might save the smaller jobs for yourself and the larger ones for the pros. Even a general contractor can refinish wood for you at a low cost. It’s much less than replacing the floors or cabinets and it makes quite an impression.
  • Regrouting tile: you probably have tile somewhere in your home and you may not know how long it’s been since someone has put a fresh layer of grout on it. If you can’t remember, then it’s probably time to add some. Regrouting tile is affordable, not difficult and adds more appeal to your existing backsplash, shower or walls. Even if you ask professionals to do it for you, you’re going to keep the costs lower than if you retiled everything.
  • Revamp your porch: if you have a porch or just a slab of concrete in your backyard, then you might consider installing an awning. People enjoy a place to kick back and enjoy the sights and sounds of the outdoors. An awning is not an expensive installment and adds a touch of brilliance to the backyard.
See, there are some simple touchups you can do at affordable prices that will help you sell your home quicker and for more money. As the real estate market bouncers back, people are looking to move and buy, so consider these ideas when you begin to list your home.

Even if you don’t want to exert the effort to do these touchups, you can hire construction specialists to do it for you; and since the jobs are relatively simple, labor will be cheap and you’ll be done in no time.

How many watts do I need in an emergency?

If you ever want to find out how people lived 100 years ago all you have to do is be at home when there is a power outage. No TV, no computer, no refrigerator and you can forget charging your mobile phone.

Should you be plunged into darkness next time a tree brings down a power-line or the national grid can’t cope, it’s worth being prepared.
The most basic method of supplying backup power is running a generator in your back garden (10 feet from the house to avoid carbon monoxide poisoning) and using an extension cord to plug-in your appliances.  Portable generators are the simplest and most cost effective way of running your home when the power is down – but then you’ll have to decide which appliances you need to plug in first.

Here’s a look at some of the items you can’t do without in times of an emergency and the power they use.

Microwave – 600 to 1,200 watts
This is the best form of cooking appliance to use if you are without power for a number of days, due to the low amount of wattage it uses. It’s also a good way of heating up those frozen meals that might be defrosting after the freezer has been out of action for a few days.

Refrigerator/Freezer - 700 to 1,200

Depending on the size of your appliance the wattage can be reasonably low. You may want to transfer food items that you will be using soon from the freezer to the refrigerator to keep them reasonably fresh, rather than defrosting entirely. Remember, a decent freezer will be insulated well enough to keep your items frozen for 24 to 48 hours.

Washing Machine - 1,200 watts
Okay, not the most vital appliance in the time of an outage but assuming the kids have to go to school and you still have to go to work, you can’t stay in the same clothes until the power kicks in again. Make sure you put on a full load and set the machine to its lowest possible setting.

Television - 300 watts

If sitting around in candle light with the family, creating your own entertainment has become too much to bear, it may be time to switch on the TV. At just 300 watts, turning on the box won’t use up too much of your valuable power and it gives you a good excuse to be selective about what you watch.

Laptop - 250 watts
To ensure you are not entirely cut off from the outside world and if you’ve become exhausted of talking to the neighbours, you may want to power-up the laptop. Used sparingly, the laptop can be run pretty effectively but with your router not getting power there’s little danger of your kids talking to their friends online all day.

Air conditioner/Portable heater 1,500 watts
Depending on when the power cut occurs very much determines whether you use your valuable power supply on climate control, not to mention where you live. But at a massive 1,500 watts by the time you’ve finished arguing whether to turn it on or not the power will have probably been restored.

Home Summer Time Worries

Ah, summer! It’s finally nice outside, you aren’t complaining 24/7 about being cold, and you can enjoy all of this newly found time spent with your family. All of these may be true, and I know I can’t wait for these days to approach. However, we still have to make necessary precautions for our family homes, especially when you’re away. But don’t worry; I have some easy tips to ensure a worry free summer.

Create a Checklist
Silly right? But it’s actually extremely beneficial. Studies have shown that writing things down help you remember that information; because of the time and place you’ve wrote it down, this will help your brain trigger what was needed during that time. Start with the least important tasks—most people overlook these items, and make it the hardest to remember. Make the checklist nice and neat; having a checklist always makes your work seem less overwhelming, and makes you a happier traveler.

Pre-Vacation Planning
This all depends on what tasks you need to accomplish before you leave for your trip. Do you have a dog? Reserve a spot at a local doggie day care or kennel well in advance—or arrange for a family member to watch your K9 friend. How long are you going on you trip for? You may need to contact your postal carrier to stop/forward mail for the time being while you’re off having fun.

Leaving Lights On
There are many advances in technology, so why not use them? There are great timers that you can purchase to set up in your home, which turns on and off your lights. This will make it appear as though there is still common traffic in your house. Not only does it appear to potential criminals that you’re home, but it also saves you money on your electrical bill, rather than keeping your lights on at all times while you’re away.

Turning Off Appliances
This may seem simple, but this step is easily overlooked (maybe put this at the top of your checklist!). This will ease your worry about the safety of your home, and will also cut down the costs of maintaining your home while you’re away.

Social Network Postings
As excited as you are to leave on your planned vacation, try and stay away from posting anything on Facebook or Twitter—this makes it known that you aren’t home, and makes you an easy target.

Final Precautions
These last steps will fully ensure you’re happiness while you’re out lying by the beach. Make sure to lock all doors and windows (I know, duh!), and tell someone you trust (maybe a neighbor) about your travels, and if they could keep an eye on the house for you. Even though you’ve completed all safety tasks before you leave, it’s always nice to know someone is looking out or you.
